January 26

New product

With the new year fast approaching, along with it comes the 26th day of January.
A day many still celebrate as Australia Day...

A day to mark when Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack on the Port Jackson shoreline on January 26, 1788.

But did you know, that January 26 wasn’t adopted as "Australia Day" until 1935?First Nations people declared January 26 a “day of mourning” in 1938.

Now, most Australians associate the day with a holiday. A day to celebrate all things that it means to be an Australian, BBQ's, Cricket, Beers and a day off work.
But to a vast majority of First Nations people and allies, this day remains a day of mourning, a day this country was changed forever and a day that for many will never be the date to celebrate.

Here at Koolang Moothang, we do not subscribe to the idea that January 26 should be celebrated as Australia's birthday or Australia Day. We believe January 26 should remain a day of mourning, as it's the reminder of the day things changed forever, particularly for our First Nations people.
In saying that, we aren't condoning a celebration of all that it means to be Australian and we're not blaming the people of today for the atrocities of the past, however we do ask at as a nation we move forward together with the First Nations people in the font of our minds, as we say together that: January 26 is not the date to celebrate!
